Unfortunately, because of circumstances related to the Covid-19 pandemic, our performance with Apichatpong Weerasethakul had to be canceled. Needless to say, we were very disappointed. But we are thrilled that Apichatpong has received so many honors for his new film Memoria. We wish him the very best and hope that in the future, when our world is back to normal, he might consider another project with us.

Please check back here on the website for updates on future projects.

Romantic songs of the Patriarchy

Romantic Songs of the Patriarchy was a three-day durational musical performance by the Icelandic artist Ragnar Kjartansson. It was staged throughout the spaces of The Women’s Building in the Mission District of San Francisco on November 9th, 10th and 11th, 2018. Our visitors encountered 31 women placed throughout the building, playing guitars and singing familiar and what at first appeared to be innocuous love songs but, when listened to more carefully, revealed more complex and often disturbing attitudes.

Kjartansson was fascinated by The Women’s Building’s mission and deeply moving atmosphere and became intrigued by the idea of creating a performance that would fill the space like a sculptural form, through the ongoing repetition of love songs about women, written mainly by men. The nature of the space itself revealed the hidden intentions of these songs, and the embedded authority they implied, a notion that is deeply intertwined in our culture.
